Daphne’s Fingers (from the Amber Fear series) by Laila Marie Costa
2020

Sterling silver, 100% pure Baltic amber, vintage beads, collected plastic object, sticker

Laila Marie Costa is a Melbourne based, neuro divergent artist and curator who works across contemporary jewellery, collage, assemblage, installation and occasionally sound. The nebulous spaces between fine art, craft and design are the areas that intrigue and inspire the bulk of her investigations. Costa’s working process is based on collecting the waste and refuse of consumer culture from her daily domestic and work life. The debris is sorted by obsessive methodologies that allow the materials to infer the form. Her creations are further informed by her Italian heritage, domesticity, feminism, environmental issues, art history, materiality and a wry sense of humour.

Covid Begone by Frances D’Aintree
2020

Sterling silver, flat scallop NZ shell, rough tanzanite, 900 gold

Utilising goldsmithing techniques, precious metals and stones, as well as found objects, Frances D’Aintree is a passionate artist creating works that reflect contemporary society as well as the infinite exquisiteness of the human experience, from antique times to the present. His intention with this piece was to create a talismanic protective jewel against Covid-19. He gathered that scallop shell on New Zealand’s North Island, during a six-month enforced lockdown in 2020. ‘Perchten Mask’ below was repousse’d to depict an angry face, then overheated so that ‘tears’ and cracks developed. The detached stainless steel ‘pin’ bears a rough cut Tanzanite that symbolises both D’Aintree’s birth continent Africa and the violet blue of the throat chakra. Serving as a talisman/amulet, the entire piece protects by frightening away Covid, protecting the air passages and throat of the wearer with its tanzanite gem.

Contain and Hold by Paige Van Doren
2019

Copper, bronze, sterling silver, enamel

Paige Van Doren was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Van Doren’s work emerges from places in the body where trauma, memory, and time are in relationship. This work manifests in the format of the necklace. Necklaces address the neck, the chest, and the gut; sites of the body where trauma often resides. When one has experienced trauma, the reliability of our gut instincts, the sensations in our chest when something isn’t quite right, and the way the hair stands up on the back of our neck when something chilling is near, can all become untrustworthy signals. This necklace rests over and guards these sites and carries substantial material weight. To let this piece hang around your neck is to be anchored, is to be grounded. It is to feel aware of your own body and its sense of presence through the weight and material of the work.

Alps by Birgit Duval
2020

Sand cast ring in Shibuichi Keum-boo in 24K, bronze, green Japanese patina

Birgit graduated from the Master school in Munich in 2004 and went to Windhoek, Namibia where she trained apprentices and managed the workshop for a famous jeweller. When she arrived in Cape Town, she begun to develop her own style. She started to combine her knowledge of traditional craftsmanship with Japanese techniques. Unconventional combinations between Keum-boo, sand cast, Japanese alloys and patinas are the basis of her bold and unique creations. Birgit developed the ring Alps during lockdown in October 2020 when she started thinking of past and present places she has lived in. An homage of the Bavarian alps, she used Shibuichi with a light bronze patina as well as a green patina showing the green slopes where the cows graze. The sand cast piece materialises the valleys and mountains with all their colorful flowers.

Bobtail Squid Necklace by Carolina Gomes
2020

Polymer clay, resin, pigments, reflective glass beads, iridescent glass beads

Carolina Gomes is a contemporary jeweller based in San Francisco. She strives to inspire people through creations in spite of quite troubled childhood and adolescence. Creativity for her is a force that cures, brings meaning, reinvents, and moves people forward. Since 2017, her focus has been art jewellery. From the precious inspiration of nature, she creates wearable sculptures as a way to awaken in people an admiration for life. She embodies these ideas in her jewellery through the profusion of perspectives, organic forms, asymmetric balances, multiplicity of colours, shapes and textures. All jewels are unique pieces, produced on a small scale, handmade by her. Currently, she has been working mainly with polymer clay, resin, pigments, and metals.

Stick Together by Sophie Rose
2020

23.75K gold leaf, 14ct gold, sterling silver, topaz, zinc, iron, steel

Sophie Rose is fascinated by outdated and found materials and objects. This piece of jewellery tells the story of materials, functions and opposites – repelling, quirky and maybe even ugly, but nonetheless attracting and blurring by its finest glow, gloss and cut. By creating wearable pieces of jewellery combining precious and non-precious materials and traditional craft practices, she attempts to expand the concept of ‘the beautiful and the traditional’ by contrasts and surprises: Fair mined precious metals, blank polished surfaces and glimmering details on the one hand, and the use of found ‘valueless’ objects or gemstones in untraditional vice versa settings, on the other hand – paying homage to ‘the unusual and the scrap’, and giving the possibility to discover and perceive the beauty behind unexpected forms and ordinary materials.

Moonscape from the Concrete Rocks! collection by Marie Therese Wolf
2020

Cement, industrial brass tubes, pearls, galena, gold leaf

Marie was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. She moved to Tokyo in her late teens to study Japanese and continued her studies in England where she received Masters degrees in Interactive Design and Business Administration. An exposure to many different cultures is evident in Marie’s approach to design where she distills these influences into her pieces. The urban nature of concrete has always appealed to the artist. The ‘moonscape’ is made from brass, concrete, pearl, gold and galena. This composition juxtaposes natural elements such as sand, galena and brass with water – the pearl. In this ring-pendant, the shape of the pearls strongly evokes the mood of the moon; cement forming a bulge around the pearl, like a protective wall. The result is a moonscape-like visual. The use of the piece is left to the wearer. It can be put onto a chain or cord and worn around the neck or worn on a finger. It can be taken along as a talisman on a first date or placed onto your dining room table.

Threading of Ocean by Qin Xu
2018

Brass, Copper, Wool, Silk, Pearl, Net, Glass

Qin Xu is an active jewellery artist, fibre artist and product designer, based in Beijing, China and New York, USA. The human body and nature drive her to explore the boundaries of different worlds using synaesthesia and intuition. On the one hand, she wants to establish a particular connection between nature and human beings, and on the other hand, establishes the connection between the internal self and the external world. She performs these explorations through the use of organic forms and natural materials in her art works. Threading of the Ocean is a piece of wearable art that discusses the relationship between nature and human beings in a poetic approach. In the story, a girl keeps salvaging objects from the ocean, such as shells, seaweed and pearls, symbolising how humans take resources from nature while it practices tolerance.

Creating the poster, I imagined the jewellery pieces being absorbed in an untitled future artifact, just like insect fossils, trapped inside amber. The poster was created in 3D, using VR sculpting and AI generated textures.

Janis is fascinated by how real and artificial, ancient and modern, mythologic and factual could be merged together to form the future. In 2017 Janis graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven and currently is part of creative design studio Builders Club London and Morph Collective.

Take and Tame ring from the Here and Now Series by Ana Calbucci

Silver, polymer clay, tourmalines

Ana Calbucci studied architecture and design at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jewellery got into her life as a meaningful interplay of emotion and imagination, bringing together all the universe of her architecture and design experience. The Take and Tame ring was molded during a learning process of mindfulness and self-compassion, in the quarantine time. These series materialised many discoveries and difficulties through these hard times. The basis for all this learning is to anchor your mind in the present moment, name and validate the dominant sensation at the moment, giving space to it, taking and taming the painful experiences compassionately.

Propped Wall Brooch Resilience Series by Elvira Cibotti
\n2020

Recycled paper, paper thread, silver, steel brooch pin

Having always been an avid observer of her surroundings, Elvira Cibotti feels the need to talk about the impressions and feelings embossed in her conscious and subconscious mind. Through jewellery she has found a way to express herself and evoke what matters to her. Her material of choice — paper. By reusing old publications, she gives them a second life through hand constructing, layering and texturising.

Green Pea Earring by Martina Enevold
\n2020

Upcycled plastic toys, pearls, stones and glass pearls assembled with 925 silver wire

Martina works with movement, wearables and related objects. Her work is often reflecting on our perception of time – how do we perceive the past and what do we leave behind for the future? A notion of circularity is evident in her work, which often involves collecting and assembling objects to create new meanings through new constellations. A recurring source of inspiration for Martina is the nature that surrounds us as well as that which inhabits us. Part of the collection Relics of The Future consisting of unique, handmade, upcycled jewellery.

Liesbeth’s Wine by Veronika Fabian
\n2019

Wine bottles, brass

Veronika Fabian is a Hungarian jewellery artist based in London. Trained as a financial analyst, she gravitated toward jewellery after seven years in the financial sector. Fabian’s work is informed by her own journey from complex analysis to handcraft, economics to design. Her work investigates the impact of contemporary capitalism on daily life and personal identity, both of which play a vital role in her collections. The necklace is part of the series You, Me and Your Stuff and was selected for Schmuck 2021, in which the artist is making jewellery by reconstructing everyday objects identified as being important in people’s lives.

Not Compatible by Corrina Goutos
\n2020

Bone, e-waste, costume jewellery, industrial materials, cold enamel, steel

A New York State native, Corrina Goutos is an artist working in jewellery, objects and instillation. After her studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Corrina relocated to Germany where she currently lives and works. Her motto as a maker in the Anthropocene era is to learn the properties of the ready-made object as a craftswoman would with raw material. In this Corrina perpetuates a value shift she believes is long overdue in the luxury market – where value is not inherent through the use of precious materials but rather the conceptualisation of ideas into neo-materiality – the preservation of skilled craftsmanship in an overridingly throwaway culture is the rare good.

After Party by Shaunia Grant
\n2020

Brass, powder coat, mylar balloon

Shaunia Grant is an object maker, born and raised in the border town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Her identity as a queer woman of colour informs her perspective as a maker as she explores the topic of childhood disappointment and the complications of nostalgia. She aims to encapsulate the feelings of childhood disappointment and create distanced sentimental moments of memory. She attempts to remind people of the disappointing moments, the aftermath of the party, the birthday no one came to, the lack of tickets to get any prize. In After Party a worn mylar balloon is trapped inside of a white wire constructed cage. The balloon presses against the wires uncomfortably, only relieved by the slow deflation over time. This brooch serves as a memento of the end of a party and the leftovers after the celebration takes place.

In Worship of the Golden Calf by Verna Leigh Jooste 2019

Gold, silver, enamel, red matches

Verna Jooste is a jeweller, design lecturer and artist. Her love of all things metal is the theme of her life’s works and collection, but these days her concern for our planet and its well-being is what grabs her attention and inspires. The piece entitled In Worship of the Golden Calf, hopes to challenge our treatment and abuse of the Amazon (which in the view of the artist is being devastated by capitalism, deforestation, the meat industry and corrupt politics). The Pre- Columbian Narigurea Nose Pendant were researched and referenced as traditional articles of jewellery which were worn for the specific intention to protect for hundreds of years by the Tribes of the Amazon.

Cradled by Jacqueline Morren
\n2020

Jade, silver

After extensive travels (starting in 1999 from her country of origin The Netherlands) Jacqueline Morren ‘ended up’ in New Zealand where she became acquainted with its precious stone Pounamu (Jade) and earned a Diploma in Jade and Hard Stone Carving. She then carried out her own explorations of discovery and established exciting ways to combine jade and sterling silver in an ethical work practices that replaces harsh chemicals for old traditional and natural products, joins materials without the use of glue, and recycles silver. This ring Cradled stems from living in a broken earthquake- struck city where inhabitants are constantly being confronted with terms like ‘decon-recon’, leaving its indelible imprint on her psyche.

Plexiglas, stainless steel, barbed wire, raku-ceramics

KaKaBoy is a Covid-19 merde, a portable object, a shitting boy. Barbed wire symbolises the pressure on Jesus’ shoulders, but also for the pressure Covid-19 puts on our shoulders. The work was made around Christmas 2020 and is the inspiration and link to Jesus versus Covid-19.
