Please Don’t Perceive Me by Rebecca Schena
2021

Nickel silver, titanium, sterling silver, resin, silicone, glass beads, assorted rubber tubes, polarizing film

Rebecca Schena is a California-based jeweller, maker, writer, and aspiring maximalist. Please Don’t Perceive Me is a depiction of her current emotional and social state after ten months of sheltering in place. An amorphous, though not-unfriendly blob of purple goo sits timidly in its protective shell, unable to distinguish whether it is trapped or merely too afraid to leave. The occasional glimpses it gets of the world beyond the barrier no longer pacify it; it feels silly to waste energy considering a future that may never come. Every friendly conversation with passing strangers leaves it horrified and impressed by its own capacity for social ineptitude, so it goes back to staring at its reflection as odd protrusions emerge from its flesh. ‘Oh god,’ it thinks, ‘what has become of me?’

Revelations in Solid Matter by Claire Webb
2019

Hematite, silver, steel

Claire Webb is an artist whose current research explores the boundaries between known and unknown, questioning established routes to understanding. From optically rich material manipulations emerge objects of wonder and inquiry that regard the nature of knowledge and perception. Revelations in Solid Matter consists of sixteen hematite cabochons, arranged in a bulging grid, bouncing gently at the end of silver springs. This kinetic brooch conflates intuitive modes of inquiry, like divination, with rational ones, like modern science. The hematite domes act as mirrors, evoking ancient divinatory practices in which seers peer into reflective surfaces in order to gain hidden knowledge. Each of the sixteen springs respond to the movement of the wearer with a seductive jiggle. Its slight distortion creates an illusion reminding us that knowledge is scarce, and truth is enigmatic, no matter how it is gathered.

by Elvis Wesley, 2021

Somewhere in time and space, formations of gleaming extraterrestrials are heading to our blue planet. Propelling into hyperspace on an intergalactic mission to entice us with their cosmic and otherworldly allure.

Elvis Wesley is a creative studio that mixes the fields of visual art and design. It is dedicated to and named after the unjustly forgotten artist carrying the same name: Elvis Wesley. Not much is known about the spunky artist of past glory—only that he doesn’t really exists. The studio breathes life into his imaginary life story to enrich and entertain the world with visions and relics from his yet to be written history.

\nAusra Bankauskaite is Lithuanian born, New York based jewellery artist. She completed her studies in jewellery design and Metalsmithing at Vilnius Academy of Arts. Ausra launched her studio brand Aka Jewellery in 2017. Throughout her work, Ausra explores the relation between natural materials, modularity and the wearer’s body. Technical connections and details together with unusual placement on the body often create ethereal, alien-like impressions of the pieces.

Mild steel, sterling silver, enamel, powder coat, safety chain

Ben is a jeweller and metals artist in Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University in May of 2019 with a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design.
\nThis necklace was an experiment in form, colour, and scale. It was made during a three month residency at the BJC where I reintroduced colour into my work.
\n‘I rarely make neckpieces and while I make jewellery on a larger scale, I had never attempted something like this before. This necklace is the culmination of seeing what was possible when making in an unrestricted environment.’

Gum Necklace by FESTIVO design
\n2020

Formica, brass, rubber lace, resin stone FESTIVO design is a meticulous and innovative design studio, which thrives on curiosity for production techniques, the search for materials and processes that allow them to project their ideas, and their love of things well made. Born in Colombia, where they graduated in Product Design in Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, Carolina Giraldo and Mauricio Chamie later moved to Spain. The materials of the necklace are easy to disassemble in order to recycle them or to recombine the formica, brass, rubber and resin elements with the same structure.

2 necklaces #yellow-grey/lightgreen-green by Susanne Hammer
\n2019

Melamine, textile

Susanne Hammer has studied in Pforzheim and the University of Applied Arts Metal Product Design in Vienna, and boasts an extensive list of international exhibition participation in cities like Barcelona, Budapest, Piacenza, Vienna, Shanghai, New York and beyond. The series Geometric Exercises deals with geometric shapes which are in contrast to the body. The two-dimensional geometric shapes evolve on the body from a flat shape into space. Made of a three-layer material, the spatial-sculptural necklaces get their mobility through textile.

Negotiation by Wenyin Jiang
\n2019

Copper wire, microphone, electrical machinery, electrical components, double sided mirror, button

As a previous economist, Wenyin Jiang is trained in logical and critical thinking. However now, in her current studies at Central Saint Martins, she is trying out the great combination of logical thinking and unlimited creativity. This piece is inspired by the negotiations of the trade war between China and the US. Negotiation acts like a communicating vessel where liquid in various containers will establish an equal level under same atmospheric pressure, but the media changes from liquid to sound. Connecting, and being open and honest are premises for negotiation. Sound carries information back and forth dynamically between negotiators till the end of the conversation. It works like a double-sided mirror: not only will the two parties know more about their counterpart, they’ll also have a deeper understanding of themselves.

From LINE TO SPACE –Cube– by Carola Kosche
\n2020

Silver, steel silk

When developing her jewellery, Carola Kosche tries to create an assembly of single elements to a whole body. A simple way of joining several elements together can bring about a new, complex whole. With this method, she hopes to grasp the general essence of things, which seem complex and hold their secret in the way their parts are put together. She has drafted and built pieces around the topic of geometric body jewellery. Thin silver pipes, threaded on a single thread of steel silk, form linearly outlined bodies. They gain spatial effect and reflect perspective, going from line to space, demonstrating a fascinating transition from the second to the third dimension.

Morfoligie earrings from Urban collection by Inesa Kovalova
\n2019

3D-printed nylon, 24K gold leaf, gold-plated silver

Inesa is a Ukrainian-born, Amsterdam-based jewellery designer. Her professional path is characterised with the change of scales and cultures. Her design work has started from urban planning and architecture in Ukraine and Russia, after which she studied jewellery design in Italy and London. These featherweight earrings use 3D-printed artefacts with traditional gold leaf from Venice by Artisanal Gold producer Mario Berta Battiloro. Influenced by the exploration of relationships between material, craftsmanship and design embraced by early twentieth Century French modernist jewellers, Inesa Kovalova aspires to reinvent our understanding of luxury jewellery in the context of shifting values and the urgency of sustainability.

Silver, natural onyx beads

Lili Pecirep is a south London based fine jewellery designer who studied her craft at a number of renowned jewellery schools. She draws her inspiration from the tropes of urban jewellery, boho accents and meditative properties involving movement and touch. Her jewellery is expressed through geometric forms and employs kinetic and tactile properties to promote focus and emotional freedom. This silver bangle is designed with massage properties in mind, playing with the idea of the Emotional Freedom Technique. The wearer can use the bangle as a grownup pacifier, massager or soother. The beads rotate so the wearer can either spin them to alleviate stress, massage temples or parts of their body. This is a one of a kind piece.

Orange Microbe by Paul McClure
\n2020

Silver, acrylic, nylon

Paul McClure is an Irish-Canadian artist and designer of contemporary jewellery. ‘Orange Microbe’ is a jewel that express his fascination with the microscopic realm of the human body. Abstract forms refer to bacteria, viruses, cells and their structures within us. As these invisible but universal components come to define us, they also acquire cultural meaning independent of their biological definition. The highly aestheticised microscopic imagery and cutaway diagrams from popular science are particular sources of inspiration for this work: geometric forms, graphic patterns and vibrant colours. The forms are built using a combination of computer modelling and 3D printing technologies with traditional metalworking techniques of forming, fabricating and finishing.

Vir7 ring by David Miralles-Vomovo
\n2019

Silver 925

David is the owner of the jewellery workshop Novelda, Alicante, and apprenticed with renowned goldsmith Giovanni Corvaja. His work explores the relationship between shape and technology, with influences as diverse as geometry, minimalism, simplicity or irony. Ever since he was a student he has been fascinated by aerodynamic forms and symbols. He is essentially interested in creating works that call for the participation of the audience, setting up a feedback loop with the object. Despite the fact that his pieces mainly have a unisex component, they are more primed for men.

Back to the Moon Necklace by Esther Ortiz-Villajos 2020

Black rodhium plated brass and plaster

Esther Ortiz-Villajos has worked in her own studio since 2007 where she combines her professional career as an architect with teaching and jewellery. She is trained in various techniques: stone-setting, enamelling, porcelain and wax modelling. ‘The soil of the Moon was not uniformly scaly, but revealed irregular bare patches of pale, slippery clay… On the Moon there were vast areas we had never had any reason or curiosity to explore…’ — The Distance of the Moon by Italo Calvino. Fragile surfaces, loaded with suggestions, unexpected but tangible, frozen in time, captured for memory, delimited in space and protected to perpetuate them intact and explore them in detail, just as they are.

Mundus cuff by Charlotte Romer
\n2020

Aluminium, yellow citrine

Art historian, graduate of Sorbonne University and Ecole du Louvre in Paris, Charlotte Romer quickly integrated into the art market world. After nine years working in a renowned decorative arts gallery in Paris, she is caught up by her first love: creation, jewels, gemstones, poetry, mechanics and photography. In 2020 she founded Studio C, which allowed her to bring her musings to life and to share her universe. In this small series, her creations are designed from a sophisticated mechanical object diverted into jewellery. They are handmade- and then one or more gemstones are specially selected for their glistening colours and harmoniously combined with the clear metal tone of aluminium. Signed and numbered, each piece is unique.

WYSINWYG by Linda Savineau
\n2021

3D printed steel

Linda is a Belgian born graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, Berchem, Antwerp. WYSINWYG (what you see is NOT what you get). A box is a boundary with a void inside. This is the starting point of her work: breaking the stereotype of the relationship between container and content. By transforming objects and playing with material, design and function, she provides an opportunity for people to look at things differently, to blur the boundaries of their perception. She uses a combination of computer-designed, handmade and 3D printed work. The resulting pieces challenge the preconception that artist and machine are always at odds. Here she presents a stack of jewellery to confuse the viewer even more (how many pieces of jewellery do you see?). They morph into one intriguing piece.

Vegetable tanned cow leather, sheepskin, galalith belt buckle, brass, magnets

After studying sociology, ethnology and archeologyarchaeology at Paris University, Flore Soria decided to reinvent herself and began to learn leather craft techniques at Grégoire Ferrandi’s School in Paris. She spent the following years honing her newly acquired skills with several companies, including a studio specialising in aircraft leather interiors. Her jewellery collections express her attempt to apply particular leather craft techniques to jewellery production. Technical creativity and aesthetic research revolve around a favourite material – leather – and the gestures associated with it. As a living material, with a wide variety of textures, thicknesses and resistance, leather offers multiple technical choices in the way it can be worked.

970 by Amanda Stumpf
\n2019

Colour coated copper mesh, bismuth, velvet ribbon, iron wire

Amanda is an American jewellery maker from Pennsylvania. My work is for those looking for stability, searching for balance in life and people who want to feel grounded. I use pressure and weight to enable the wearer to feel security and serenity. I weave each piece by hand on a loom with tubular, copper mesh resulting in a metal cloth to create a stable base material to work with. All the work is physically very heavy as far as jewellery is concerned. My aim is to give a sense of grounding and tranquillity through its weight. Through the repetitive act of weaving I find balance in making these works, the intent is to transfer that calming effect to the wearer.

Intersection Pendant by Berta Sumpsi
\n2019

Sterling silver, cotton thread

Berta Sumpsi is moved by the symbolic value of jewels, their uses and the relations they establish with wearers. She considers the symbiosis of hand crafted work, contemporary thinking and design as essential. Jewellery is a constant dialogue between the maker, the user and the observer. Her creative vocabulary is expressed in minimal gestures and elements. Berta’s pieces are persistent exercises around a single starting shape, material or idea. By looking closely and obsessively, these ideas acquire depth and their multiple possibilities unfold. The Intersection collection (2019) is made up of five unique pendants. The series explores the volumes that appear after colliding and joining different rounded volumes.

Forbidden Fruit by Aiyi Zhang

Horsehair, soap

Aiyi Zhang is originally from Guangzhou, China. She is studying her final year on BA Jewellery, Material and Design at Sheffield Hallam University, England. ‘W ithin all the cleaning rituals in the bathroom, the use of soap is my favourite. I’m fully in control of this material, with my hands, my eyes, and parts of my body, intentionally or unconsciously shaping it. Jewellery is the thing we wear when dressed up outside; while soap is the thing we wear naked in the bathroom. I see potential in every substance and thus, believe soap can be made wearable too.’ Hand crafted through jewellery tools, the form of soap has been completely transformed into a chain that can be displayed or worn anywhere. The bond between the material and its original environment has been broken, now it can be worn on the body or worn away by the body.
