by Fumiko Gotô
2019

Buffalo horn, serpentine, chalcedony, sterling silver, stainless steel pin

Born and raised in Japan and having lived in the US and Switzerland, Fumiko’s long-time interest in applying traditional Japanese motifs to ornament is now taking shape. As in archtecture, she sets the scale of her jewellery to human physiology. In this case, that is the size that fits in the mouth, as inspired by traditional Japanese sweets: wagashi. She has been especially compelled by the siz hito- kuchi, which means ‘mouthful,’ a morsel that can be ingested whole, all at once. Fumiko was inspired to transform these treats into jewellery, employing substances reminiscent of traditional materials such as polished black buffalo horn which recalls black-lacquerware, mammoth ivory as a substitute for the protected ivory of Netsuke-carvings and gems that evoke the chromatic heritage of traditional Japanese jewellery.

by Thami, 2021

I’ve been drawing since 2016 before I tried graphic design. I like to draw and doing some animated videos. I studied in a graphic school in Paris. My work is not really mature yet, but I am working on it.

About this work, Instinctively I started a kind of big abstract set with gimmicks shapes that can be found more or less everywhere to hold the compo. Then I distributed the jewels trying to camouflage them while trying that globally they are harmonious, of the blow I little work the colours also. I didn’t want to redesign the jewels, I think they wouldn’t be recognisable anymore.

Lilac Nest by Susana Baldaia
\n2020

Raffia Susana Baldaia is an architect from Porto, Portugal who seeks to combine her experience in architec- ture with her appreciation for craft techniques. After attending a tapestry course at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto, Susana began to experiment with wearable textiles. Like a bird weaving its nest, Lilac Nest piece is made through repeated gestures, executed patiently and carefully. Spontaneity and randomness play a central role in the process—which builds on a pre-defined initial form through simple techniques—dictating the outcome.

Piscines by Damaris Durrleman
\n2020

Gold-plated brass, upcycled acrylic

Born and raised in the field of contemporary art, Damaris Durrleman discovered the jewellery world after studying business and design. Energised to create practical jewellery sustainably and responsibly, she learned to work with both metal and unconven- tional materials. Her work is the result of passionate research in two areas: movement and equilibrium, and the use of upcycled and natural materials. The Piscines earrings were inspired by the shimmering of sunlight on water. They play with varying levels of brightness—the soft light of the synthetic stones contrasts with the bright, brushed metal.

Untitled by Eva Fortuño Escriche
\n2020

Nylon, car paint, natural wool felt

Eva Fortuño Escriche is a Barcelona-based artist active in the field of contemporary jewellery. After previously working as a graphic designer, Eva attended the Artistic Jewellery Program at Massana School of Art. Since graduating in 2020, Eva has been develop- ing jewellery pieces that create harmony between opposites—technology and tradition, softness and rigidity. Eva believes that all shapes related to the circle, the most geometrically perfect shape, convey a sensation of infinite calm. In OBSESSĬO, her ongoing series, she hopes that people may achieve mental peace while observing, touching or playing with her creations.

Imperfection by Veronika Fazekas
\n2019

Cardboard, gold-plated brass, silver, stainless steel, acrylic Veronika Fazekas is a Hungarian jeweller whose work takes many forms beyond the singular object, such as jewellery performances, live installations and jewellery happenings. She thrives on interdiscipli- nary experimentation. Imperfection is a brooch in her Veronika Coelho series. In this piece, there is a hidden message of wisdom, visible only from a certain angle.

The Female Figure by Stefano Fronza
\n2016
\nPhotograph imprinted on aluminium, PVC, titanium, steel

Stefano Fronza is an experimental goldsmith who began his career under the guidance of his father in their family laboratory. Stefano feels that it is his duty as a goldsmith to compose beautiful dialogues between vision, colour and material properties. He maintains a certain irreverent distance from his creations, making space for others to embody each photographic moment that he transforms and moulds.

GLU3D25 by Juan Harnie
\n2020

Glue Juan Harnie is a contemporary jewellery designer and collector based in Hasselt, Belgium. Juan has always been fascinated by unconventional materials such as human hair, latex, syringes and recently, glue. Without access to his usual materials due to the pandemic lockdown, Juan began experimenting with hot glue sticks. After initially using them for their intended purpose, he became fascinated with the dripping, layerable quality of the material. Layer after layer, like some kind of human 3D-printer, he formed organic shapes reminiscent of insect hives or birds nests. The pieces became safe havens: warm, gluey cocoons.

Water Hauler by Jamie Kroeger

Walnut, steel, copper, enamel, acrylic paint

Jamie Kroeger is a prairie-farm-kid turned environ- mental scientist turned mountain-girl who trans- lates the relationship between people and outside environments into object-based narratives. She works as an educator and practising artist. Water Hauler is a part of an ongoing project Implements of an Extra-Ordinary Existence, wherein the tools of outdoor life are made as valuable and meaningful as jewellery. The patina of wear is a testament to time and a salute to our mentors. Tasks that seem heavy or relentless can make a human grow in ways that can’t be replicated by experiences that come easy.

Pendant #1 by Michal Lando
\n2020

Sterling silver, resin, photographs, nylon cord

Michal Lando is a jewellery artist living in Brooklyn, New York, who makes work out of nylon mesh and resin. This pendant is part of her latest series that uses manipulated photographs to explore ways of seeing. Nylon mesh, a 3-dimensional material, is abstracted into virtual 2D through the camera lens and then further abstracted through computer ma- nipulations. The result is in an entirely new material bearing little resemblance to the original.

Gwen Sha Dam by Karla Mertens
\n2015

22 Carat gold, alexandrite, brilliant

Karla Mertens is a jeweller with a mission to create powerful healing, balancing and supporting Life Jewels. Karla studied goldsmithing at Sint Lucas in Antwerp, Belgium and creates wonder in her studio in Leuven. She finds inspiration in ancient cultures, alternative healing, life and death, grace and transformation and therefore emphasises sacred geometry and alchemy in her work. Gwen Sha Dam is a ‘paintel,’ a merging of painting and jewellery. The necklace, whose symbol came to Karla through mediation, consists of a golden, repoussé pendant brilliantly suspended by alexandrite beads.

Jelly and Stuff by Mo Müller
\n2019

Textile, silver, glass and plastic beads, thread, sequins, filling material

Zurich-based jewellery artist Mo Müller creates dreamy, empowering wearable objects that twinkle, tickle and vibrate. In the process of creating, Mo stages her jewellery on her own body, entering a dialogue where does the body end and the object begin? When working with natural forms and unsteady surfaces, borders become translucent. The piece dissolves into its own reflections of its surround- ings—the object, wearer and environment become one.

Conchilla by Gitte Nygaard
\n2020

Akoya pearl, tulle, titanium, zinc, 22K fairtrade gold

Gitte works across disciplines to expand conver- sations and inspire awareness of the relationship between ourselves and the objects we live with. Her work moves beyond the gallery, connects the unexpected and explores the often overlooked. Trained as a goldsmith at the Institute of Precious Metals in Copenhagen and later at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, she left the jewellery bench to explore the medium from other perspectives. Our relationship with the planet has had an enormous impact on its ecosystem, to the extent that we may soon reach the end of our journey. The pearl em- bedded in Conchilla is sensitive to changes – let’s pay attention to the life forms under the waves.

All Colors Together by Louise Stjernborg
\n2020

Plastic, watercolour

Louise Stjernborg is an interdisciplinary artist and doctor of cell biology who is fascinated by the organic cell shapes and colourful microscopic images she encounters in her scientific practice. The diversity of colours and forms she experiences are the oxygen of her life. Louise has freelanced as a knitting designer and painted in oil and acrylic, but making bold jewellery allows her to incorporate her evolving set of media: graffiti marker, industrial crayons, pyrography. The names of each of her pieces take a stand for diversity and inclusion.

Solar Flare by Celina Szelejewska-Pigulla
\n2020

Glass, sterling silver

Born in Poland, Celina studied at ‘Opus-Art’ in Sosnowiec and the Art Institute at the University of Silesia in Cieszyn where she specialised in printmaking and stained glass. Celina draws upon her extensive experience in traditional and contemporary glass processing techniques. At the centre of each of Celina’s jewellery pieces is a ‘Dream Lens,’ a unique handmade glass piece. The Dream Lens at the centre of Solar Flare is alive with vibrant colours, interwoven textures and intricate details. The true beauty of this ring is fully revealed by its interplay with refracted light, which immediately intrigues and captivates.

Evolution of Being – Pangolin II by Rho Tang
\n2019

Mother of pearl, silver, nickel silver

Rho Tang is a contemporary jewellery artist based in New York City. Rho approaches jewellery-mak- ing through an exploration of spatial relationships; composing a visual language through repetition, juxtaposition and hierarchy. Evolution is an organism’s response and adaptation to environmental stressors such as global stimuli, direct/indirect human inter- actions and internal transformations. The unity of inward and outward evolution takes shape in Rho’s Evolution of Being series. Pangolin II is composed of identical components, inspired by mitosis, that express different modalities similar to the genetic variations.

You Can’t Heal Under a Mask V by Carine Terreblanche
\n2020

Maple wood, resin, silver

Carine Terreblanche was born in South Africa in 1968. She completed her BA and MA in jewellery design at Stellenbosch University, where she has been the head of the Creative Jewellery and Metal Design Division for the last fourteen years. Carine has participated in numerous international contemporary jewellery exhibitions. Carine’s series of brooches You Can’t Heal Under a Mask I – V was inspired by a critical take on masked vigilante characters in the HBO series Watchmen, described by the New Yorker’s Emily Nussbaum as ‘a lurid freewheeling satire interrogat- ing the American worship of violent superheroes.’ In society, of course, it is not only vigilantes who mask their identity: make-up, fashion, design and jewellery are all ways of masking other realities.

CURL by Mizuki Tochigi
\n2020

Recycled plastic water bottles, recycled sterling silver

Mizuki Tochigi is a Tokyo/London-based contempo- rary jewellery artist. While studying at Central Saint Martins, Mizuki integrated sustainable thinking into her process as a positive force that encourages her to use waste creatively. She uses jewellery techniques to deepen the preciousness of everyday materials. CURL is a bangle made from plastic water bottles that addresses the consequences of our actions on the environment. Inspired by the great oceans of the world, Mizuki explores the poetic beauty and energy of waves by mimicking their power with the cleanliness, transparency and reflectivity of plastic bottles.

Convergence I by Stina Siqiong Wen
\n2020

Concrete, silicone, sterling silver, stainless steel pin

Growing in the shifting landscape between an agricultural university and the urban sprawl of Guangzhou, China provided Stina Siqiong Wen with the ability to envision harmony between the natural and industrial. Stina’s jewellery transmits personal experiences through haptics. To Stina, concrete is not austere and bland, but a flexible material that can intrigue and stimulate when used in conjunction with contrasting materials. In Convergence I, the transition from coarse concrete to soft silicone creates a transitional scale of colour, transparency and tactility.

Social Distancing Red by Grit-Ute Zille
\n2020

Sheep wool, acrylic paint, acupuncture needles, luminous colour

Grit-Ute Zille is an interdisciplinary artist based in Leipzig, Germany. She started making jewellery professionally in 2005 after finding the stability she needed to pursue artistic freedom. To Grit-Ute, the boundary between jewellery and object is fluid and there are no limits on material. The spiny, spikey Social Distancing Red brooch is part of a series dealing with social distancing and the countless other situations where distance is demanded but not kept. The red drops of acrylic on the acupuncture needles glow under black light—an effect that is, on the one hand, funny, but on the other hand, triggers memories of the glowing badges used in WWII air-raid shelters. Realised with the help of a grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.
