Waiting Room by Margherita Chinchio
2021

Concrete, polyurethane, glass, mother of pearl, brass, acrylic coating Margherita works with movement, wearables and related objects. Her work often reflects on our perception of time: how do we perceive the past and what do we leave behind for the future? A notion of circularity is evident in her work, which often involves collecting and assembling objects to create new meanings through new constellations. A recurring source of inspiration for Margherita is the nature that surrounds us as well as that which inhabits us. In a time where everything feels suspended, even thoughts and creative process feel so to me. “Waiting room” is a jewellery-holder, mainly adapted to rings, from a soon to come suspended collection, waiting somewhere in a limbo to be launched, in the future, when everything will be normal again, and things will be developed through, at its fullest. For the best grip to keep going, waiting for better times to show back.

Round and Flawless by Jewellery Perspectives, Irma Földényi & Evelien Bracke
2020-2021

Black and white cultured pearls This project is interested in researching the renewed definition of jewellery in today’s society, researching contemporary contexts and building new ones beyond the protective confines of the artisanal workshop. When cut in half, a cultured pearl reveals its internal secrets: years of growth in sweet saltwater, tended to by farmers and hatchery technicians, to eventually be displayed as a strand of opaque pearls. Run through an MRI machine, each layer of pearl appeared to the artists like a tiny map, bringing the pearl industry into focus: layer by layer, all the interactions between humans and non-humans became transparent. If we would turn relations around and let oysters determine their own pearl production, would we ever get to wear pearl necklaces?

For this work I wanted to create an environment in which the jewellery pieces have a central space but also become something else than their initial purpose dictates. I decided to integrate the pieces in a surreal aquatic landscape, as if they were naturally occurring and presented on this underwater stand. The images have been altered to merge with my approach of digital tools.

Théophile was born in 1989 in Lorraine, France, on the German border. Now working in Paris as an illustrator, he enjoys playing with the perception and the borders of realism.

Bla Bla by Anne Luz Castellanos
\n2020

Piano key, oxidized silver, silk thread

Anne Luz Castellanos is a Buenos Aires-based industrial designer. She has exhibited at Zona Maco in Mexico, Tincal Lab in Portugal, Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Canada and Schmuck. Born and raised in Mexico with a French mother and a Mexican father, Anne has always been exposed to perspectival juxtapositions. Her recent series incorporates materials sourced from an old piano, reminiscent of her childhood, joyfully spent learning to play. However, there is a duality to this discarded instrument: the white keys are made of ivory, the forgotten remains of elephants. This work is a tribute to the departed—the elephants, the old pianos.

Chardybis by Amber Cooper
\n2021

Recycled sterling silver

Amber Cooper is a London-based jewellery designer who is entranced by the organic shapes and textures of imagined seascapes. While studying fine jewellery, she became captivated by experimental casting techniques that result in highly unusual, unpredictable forms. Each piece is a discovery. The Chardybis earrings are inspired by wild mythological seascapes. The sculptural forms are intricately textured like coastal rock formations, hewn by the oceanic currents of the wine-dark sea. They represent power and force, like the ebb and flow of the tides in a maelstrom of precious metal.

Bejeweled VIII by Lauren Darrouzet
\n2020

Sterling silver, mirrored acrylic, rhinestones, Swarovski crystals, resin, stickers, steel

Lauren Darrouzet is an MFA candidate in the Metalsmithing + Jewelry Design program at Indiana University. She holds a BFA in photography from the University of North Texas. Her current work explores the relationship between collecting, childhood memories and nostalgia. Growing up in the ’90s, plastic jewels covered in fake stones were some of her most treasured items. Through combining vivid colours, solar changing, thermal and mirrored elements, the Bejeweled series attempts to recreate the sense of joy and control she felt when surrounded by these cherished objects.

Disrupted Cephalopoda by Carolin Dieler
\n2020

Aluminium

Carolin Dieler is a jewellery and accessories designer based in Cologne, Germany. After her graduation as a garment tailor, she attended the Maastricht Academy of Arts for fashion design. While interning for Chris Habana, Carolin fell in love with jewellery and decided to pursue her collection. The hand-modelled Disrupted Cephalopoda Necklace is part of the Sublime Devastation collection, which imagines three stages of our future relationship with the ocean: disruption, mutation and degradation. This necklace embodies disruption: the moment a human has a change of perspective through a sublime encounter with nature.

Berries on Small Branches by Olga van Doorn
\n2020

18K gold, white pearls

After working as a medical doctor for the first part of her life, Olga van Doorn changed her path to study goldsmithing at Vakschool Edelsmeden Amsterdam. She has exhibited her work at Sieraad Art Fair in Amsterdam and jewellery weeks in Milan, Munich and New York City. Olga advocates that ‘beauty is a human right.’ This truth is made clear when we are confronted with illness, pain or loss. The series Berries on Small Branches originates from dreams of flowing forms sprouting from the body—delicate, cherishable, yet strong.

Stretched by Sofia Eriksson
\n2020

Nickel-plated copper

Sofia Eriksson is a Stockholm-based artist working in the field of sculpture and objects. Aesthetics and concepts from the world of jewellery and ornamentation are central in her work. Eriksson explores tension and desire through material manipulations and their relation to the corporeal. In Stretched she explores elements of control within an ornamental system. Identical parts are assembled to a hanging symmetrical structure. The ornamental silhouette conforms to its condition while its contorting shapes and floating surfaces stretch out, suggesting a wish to expand into the room.

Made of Light in the Radiance of the Underground by Angela Geisenhofer
\n2019

Sand-cast tin, pigment APHER® JEWELRY & SOLIDS is a project by Angela Geisenhofer. Angela, who is based in Berlin, originally studied painting, which is the driving force behind her aesthetic. APHER® embraces peaceful elegance, playful and feminine chaos and powerful roughness. While creating the series Made of Light in the Radiance of the Underground, Angela spent a lot of time in her basement studio and saw little daylight, causing a vitamin D deficiency. For this reason, she decided to create pieces that exude symbolic light, protection and energy to the viewer, wearer and the artist.

LOVE = HATE + NOT by Gwendolyn Hansell Hendry
\n2021

Silver, gold

Gwendolyn Hansell Hendry was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a city full of sculpture. In the ’70s, she worked as an apprentice to Joan Martin, who inspired her to earn her BFA from Maine College of Art in 1984. In her 30 year career, Gwen worked for several fine jewellery establishments before launching ExactlyRight, a CAD product design company, in 2020. This design weaves together two quotes: John F. Kennedy’s ‘Ask not what America can do for you, ask what together we can do for the freedom of man.’ and Dr Martin Luther King’s ‘Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.’ The Hate + Not ring reminds us to check our words and actions for imperialism and to work together for the freedom of all.

T.O.M. Earrings by Sae Honda
\n2021

Glass pearls, sterling silver

Sae Honda is an artist/jeweller based in the Netherlands and Japan. Her works are in the permanent collection of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. These earrings belong to Sae’s series Tears of the Manmade, which explores the value of imitation pearls. The glass pearls used in this collection are delicately handcrafted by artisans in Osaka by repeatedly sinking glass kernels into a pool of pearlescent fluid. Just as natural pearls are called ‘Tears of the Mermaid,’ these pearls are ‘Tears of the Manmade.’

The Shadow of Chang’An City by Nuohan Jiang
\n2020

Sterling silver, acrylic paint

Nuohan Jiang is a Chinese jewellery artist based in New York City and Guangzhou. Having grown up in a fast-paced, developing era, Nuohan has been reflecting on ways memory relates to people. Her recent works focus on rejuvenating the forgotten past. The Shadow of Chang’An City takes inspiration from the lost city of Chang’An, which has disappeared for long stretches of history, leaving only blurry memories. Nuohan traced the cast shadow of a model of Chang’An and used it to reconstruct the lost civilization in this brooch. The city is not lost if it lives on in our memory.

Natural | Unnatural Two-Tone Earrings by Edith van Kan
\n2020

Apoxie sculpt clay, sterling silver Edith van Kan was educated at the Vakschool voor Edelsmeden in Amsterdam and later as a fashion stylist at Academie Artemis. In 2016, she began to work under the name Staring Back At Me and has since exhibited at Object Rotterdam, Designperron at Dutch Design Week and other art fairs. In the series Natural | Unnatural, Edith studies the contrast between the natural and the unatural by developing spontaneous, playful, organic earrings out of decidedly artificial material. All of the mismatched, hand-sculpted shapes are reminiscent of the human ear and no two are alike.

Morph Vertebrae Ring by Balázs Kiss
\n2020

Rendered porcelain Balázs Kiss is a Budapest-based designer and student whose works are based on experimentation and speculation. His creations, which exist at the intersection of the virtual and physical world, push the limits of existing physical forms and structural systems. The structure of the spinal column is highly functional, there is nothing superfluous in it. It is perfect, like a piece of gravel shaped by the river. Balázs’s recent collection consists of silver earrings, an earpiece and virtual objects formed by an algorithm that recreates that functional complexity.

Tout devient langage by Chloe Romanos
\n2019

Sterling silver, pearls, wood, varnish

Chloe Romanos is a French jewellery designer maker living in England. Her initial training is in archaeology, specialising in the Greek Bronze Age. She learned silversmithing while researching her PhD on travelling artisans during the Mycenaean period. Her passions for archaeology and craft stem from her quest to discover the origins and evolutions of our civilization. The In My Heart project was inspired by an immersive dance performance: the flow, the gestures, the bodies melding together. This piece turns the body inside out, as if our dreams, fears, wishes and regrets were to slip through our pores.

Une si belle cicatrice by Marina Rehbinder
\n2020

Painted brass, pearls, titanium, stainless steel

Although Marina Rehbinder has been practising as a general practitioner for almost eleven years, creation has always been an essential part of her life. She discovered contemporary jewellery while studying at AFEDAP-Formations Bijou in Paris and made her debut at Parcours Bijoux 2020. On a jewel, a scar. As evidence of a wound. As the symbol of a path. What can be done with it, despite it? Journeying through, overcoming, recomposing, integrating. A unique path for each person. And at the end of it, we still exist. Repaired, rebuilt, reinvented. Weakened, unstable, divided. Renewed, strengthened, sublimated. Alive. And marked for life. On a jewel, a scar…

The Dripping Love by Maïté Schmit
\n2020

Silver, gold

Maïté Schmit was born in Colombia and grew up in Luxembourg. She studied traditional jewellery techniques in Belgium, classic style in Germany, sculptural jewellery in Italy and 3D design in France. Having gained extensive experience in the watchmaking industry and goldsmith studios, she launched Maïté Jewelry. The Dripping Love is an under-breast piece revealing a hidden part of us, bursting out. The piece is for the brave ones, those who share their open heart. Fear is the most powerful weapon, so do not let it embed itself in your soul or heart—resist fear and don love as your armour.

Fall in Fog be Water by Xihan Zhai
\n2019

Rock crystal, pigment, silver

Xihan Zhai’s jewellery is based on natural phenomena and traditional Chinese philosophical practices such as Tai Chi, Daoism and calligraphy. To Xihan, the process of making is like washing down the sharpness of the mind. Fog is a protective layer, a gentle refuge, a mysterious veil. Despite their weightlessness, fog and water have the power to grind stone. When this piece is worn, the fog that permeates the wearer’s environment will have an object to envelop and the flowing water will have a target to wash away. Only then will the work be complete.
