Who Gives A Schicht. Not an exclamation, and not a question. More like a provocation.

[Schicht
1. layer; 2. work shift]

Susanne and Lieta invite wearers to think about and act upon the concept of layer
(layers on the body, layers of narrative, layers of interpretation, layers of communication) and the factors that are actively and constantly at work (in shifts or together) to manifest it.

Why isn’t jewellery always presented or photographed together with clothing? Why do we so often show objects instead of processes?

How much valuable discourse, development potential and explosive power lies in the everyday act of dressing up and going out in the street? Clothes and jewellery interact with the people who wear them and with those they encounter throughout the day. Through them we not only influence and create ourselves but also the constantly changing work of art in which we all participate – our community and our streetscape – providing an ever-changing snapshot of the state of our society.

We wish to unpack the act of wearing in all its often unperceived and layered complexities, not only as an act of self-interpretation but also one of understanding of our social landscape and of our role within it. Awareness of the act of wearing becomes then a manifestation of possible futures.

We invite participants to become active and conscious agents in this process by visiting the gallery to create and perform outfits with the gallery’s ethical label designs inspired by Lieta Marziali’s jewellery.

LIETA MARZIALI
(IT/UK) is a jewellery artist and independent writer, researcher, curator and mentor.

She holds Bachelor’s Degrees in English Literature (University of Surrey) and Three-Dimensional Design and Craft (Colchester School of Art), and a research practice-based Master’s Degree (The Cass School of Art, Design and Architecture). Her research and practice continue to focus on reflective practice, the intersection between search and research, the existentialist and phenomenological functions of art and its practice and the intersection of the personal, the social and the political. Most recently, her research and practice have been informed by further studies in anthropology, focusing mainly on aspects of collective and collaborative practices.

For the past 15 years she has regularly been exhibiting, publishing and lecturing internationally.

SUSANNE BLEICHER-KAIKKIS (GER) completed her studies in pedagogy, psychology and sociology at the LMU Munich.

She is the founder of RESPCT.ME Gallery in Munich, where she brings together art and fair fashion from small independent environmentally conscious designers. She organi
ses exhibitions and events and participates in the city’s cultural events (Kultüren, Munich Jewellery Week, Munich Creative Business Week) with her own projects.

Her focus is on the power of an authentic aesthetic quality to provide long-lasting attraction and interest to the owner for a much longer time than a passing fashion statement. She is interested in the process of discovering one’s own aesthetic as individual development to reveal new facets of one’s own personality, and crucially
, to guarantee a longer life for one’s possessions, therefore reducing consumption.
