The exhibition titled “pin pin an an”, meaning safe and sound, explores and reinterprets the concept of amulets in Taiwanese culture. Throughout human history, amulets and talismans are considered one of the most ancient types of jewellery and have taken on diverse forms and meanings, offering protection, attracting good fortune, and warding off misfortune or malevolent forces. This exhibition celebrates amulets featuring works by four artists who reinterpret the form and concept of amulets under Taiwan’s multicultural heritage. The works adopt a broader perspective, not solely focusing on religious beliefs but also emphasising objects that provide comfort and a sense of security. The exhibition aims to reflect the need for spiritual solace in this fast-paced and turbulent time and to convey messages of reassurance and connection through the modern interpretations of traditional symbols.

The ‘Dodoer’ team comprises four Taiwanese artists- An Chi Wang, I Ting Wang, Yu Chun Chen, and Amal Yung Huei Chao- who are passionate jewellery makers as well as dedicated educators in metal and jewellery.

Yu Chun Chen lived and worked in Europe for 15 years before returning to Taiwan, where she continues to focus on creative endeavours and curatorial projects that foster international cultural exchanges. An Chi Wang and I Ting Wang are devoted educators, teaching at universities and their studio at.object where a wide array of local and international courses are held. As a Taiwanese Muslim, Amal Yung Huei Chao spent her formative years mostly in the Middle East before returning to Taiwan for university. Her unique insight into Taiwanese culture marks her work as an artist and educator. In 2022, these four artists decided to establish the team ‘Dodoer’ dedicated to promoting the development of contemporary jewellery in Taiwan, exploring and redefining the context of Taiwanese contemporary jewellery through curatorial projects focused on local cultural themes.
