Living Matter is an exhibition that challenges the idea of matter as a static element, exploring contemporary jewellery as a symbol of life, transformation, and change.

The selected artists have created pieces that seem to breathe, grow, and evolve, reinterpreting materials traditionally perceived as “cold”: metals and stones, into pulsating, dynamic surfaces. Their creations go beyond ornamentation; they become living, evocative entities in constant dialogue with the wearer and the surrounding environment. Everything is inspired by living nature, pulsing with energy. Jewellery becomes the voice of natural vitality, silent yet powerful. Textures inspired by biological phenomena – veins, skin, tree sap – also offer a highly engaging tactile experience.

The selected artists are: Metalsmith Liz (USA), Taylor Chyn (Italy), Sandra Cepeda-Joya de Arte (Mexico), Diana Schuhmacher-Dee (Romania), Elle Irwin (USA), Yael Herman (Israel), Brigitta B. Horváth (Hungary), Alina Cuvin – Calima Jewels (Romania), Johanna Typaldos (USA), Allegra’s Jewellery Collection (Romania), Anna Maria Pitt (Belgium), Valeria Benalcázar (Ecuador), Carla Becerra (Argentina), Zhuwei Lu (USA).

Curated by HOOROON and Arte Design Venezia, Living Matter is an invitation to rethink jewellery as a symbolic organism, a fragment of living matter carrying stories of adaptation, growth, and transformation.

HOOROON, a Curatorial Studio dedicated to making contemporary jewellery accessible and understandable, joins forces with the Cultural Association Arte Design Venezia, which promotes art and design while enhancing Venice’s artistic heritage. Together, they present Living Matter, an exhibition that brings together a collective of international contemporary jewellery artists, each offering unique perspectives on materiality, transformation, and artistic expression.

Brigitta B. Horváth (Hungary) explores body language and hand gestures through brooches that symbolise human interaction and choice. Diana M. Schuhmacher (Romania), an architect turned jewellery designer, pushes the boundaries of imagination by working with various metals and stones.

Taylor Chyn
(Italy) uses texture to express spiritual depth, while Johanna Typaldos (USA) integrates international influences into her jewellery, aspiring to teach and create. Carla Becerra (Argentina) translates fleeting moments into rich metal textures, and Alina Cuvin (Romania) crafts organically shaped jewellery with a modern twist. Anna Maria Pitt (Belgium), Icelandic jewellery designer, blends experimentation and order; awarded, exhibited across Europe, now in Antwerp for an MA.

Sandra Cepeda-Joya de Arte
(Mexico) merges sculpture and jewellery-making, while Valeria Benalcázar (Ecuador) blends her background in art conservation with organic and synthetic materials. Elle Irwin (USA) transforms coastal textures into sculptural pieces, and Laura Moisa (Romania) preserves nature in silver.

Metalsmith Liz (USA) fuses craftsmanship and wearable art, and Yael Herman (Israel), with 40 years of experience, creates bold statement pieces combining traditional techniques with advanced technology. Zhuwei Lu (USA) creates statement pieces with organic shapes, rough textures and unique and evocative colors.
