As humanity moves closer to self-destruction contemporary jewellery designers have a responsibility to act both to create and educate in ways which offer hope for the future.
Tara Lois’ Maltese inspired sustainable jewellery creates narratives exploring the opposing pressures of ancient cultures, art and landscapes cradled within the Mediterranean Sea set against the conflicting forces of modern living and an increasingly uncertain future. Expressed using her distinctive bold, colourful and sculptural style, Tara Lois interprets emotions and memories into the DNA of her wearable art.
She handmakes her unique designs using recycled and waste material, inviting a rethink about what we should truly treasure, while speaking to gender fluidity as the masculine and feminine merge in strength, complexity, delicacy and optimism.
In the ebb and flow of style she fuses the ancestral wisdom of jewellery making with conceptual narrative design, at the forefront of a generation of contemporary jewellers experimenting with more user conscious and sustainable design which she calls Exclusive Sustainable Jewellery.
This project is supported by Arts Council Malta.

Tara Lois Mansell was born in the UK but grew up in France surrounded by contemporary art, which inspired her love of bold colours. Whilst studying art and sculpture, she was increasingly drawn towards creating miniature works. Her passion for jewellery was ignited whilst working with an artisan jeweller, and became a reality when she was accepted as 1 of only 10 students to train as a jeweller with the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in London. Her award winning career began at the age of only 18 when she won a coveted Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Award.
To develop her contemporary vision she studied Jewellery & Metal Design at DJCAD at the University of Dundee, focusing on emotional design. Since then she has resided in Malta on the small island of Gozo at the centre of the Mediterranean. Tara Lois has been recognised internationally for her exclusive sustainable jewellery which bridges the worlds of conceptual contemporary design and ancestral jewellery making skills, using recycled precious materials, while remaining true to her core colourful, sculptural and emotional aesthetic.
